Many Amazon sellers advertise only at the very bottom of the funnel: they bid on ready-to-buy search terms and harvest the demand that is already there. That works until competition there gets so expensive that growth looks unaffordable. The answer is a full-funnel strategy that does not only harvest but actively builds demand. This article explains how the funnel stages work together on Amazon and how to play each of them.
What "funnel" means here
The funnel describes a buyer's journey from first contact with your brand through to the purchase, and beyond that to repeat purchase. Classically it has three stages:
- Awareness: the buyer learns your brand or product exists at all.
- Consideration: they compare, research and put you on the shortlist.
- Conversion: they decide and buy.
Whoever advertises only at the conversion stage is fighting over buyers who are already at the end of their journey, and that is the most expensive and most contested point.
Why harvesting alone hits a limit
When every competitor bids on the same ready-to-buy keywords, click prices keep climbing. Eventually you pay top prices for a limited pool of demand that does not grow. The only way out of that spiral is to work higher up: to make new buyers aware of your brand before they even start comparing. That way you enlarge the pool of people who later buy from you.
Which tools belong at which stage
Amazon offers a matching format for every funnel stage:
- Awareness: Sponsored Brands (brand presence at the top of search), Sponsored Display with audience targeting and, for larger budgets, Amazon DSP, to build reach beyond search too.
- Consideration: Sponsored Brands on category keywords, Sponsored Display with competitor targeting (you appear on the pages of similar products) and broader Sponsored Products campaigns for discovery.
- Conversion: exactly targeted Sponsored Products on ready-to-buy keywords, Sponsored Display retargeting for viewers who have not bought yet, and ads on brand keywords for defense.
How the stages interlock
A full-funnel strategy is not a set of parallel activities but a loop. Awareness campaigns fill the top of the funnel with new contacts. Consideration campaigns keep you present while the buyer compares. Retargeting catches the ones who dropped out. And the conversion campaigns harvest, now from a larger pool you built yourself. The decisive effect: more activity at the top of the funnel lowers the cost at the bottom over time, because more buyers already know you.
Measurement: every stage needs its own yardstick
The most common mistake in a full-funnel approach is measuring everything by the ACoS of the conversion stage. Awareness campaigns will always "lose" that way, because by their nature they produce fewer direct sales. Judge the upper stages on reach, on new customers (the "new-to-brand" metric, for instance) and on how your organic revenue develops. Only the conversion stage belongs primarily on ACoS. TACoS helps keep the whole picture across all stages in view.
Building it up step by step
You do not have to start everything at once. A pragmatic route: begin with a solid conversion base (Sponsored Products plus brand defense). Then add retargeting through Sponsored Display, because it delivers the fastest additional value. Only after that build up the upper funnel with Sponsored Brands and, with the budget for it, DSP. That way the strategy grows with your business.
In short
Full-funnel advertising means not only taking the demand that exists but enlarging it yourself. Whoever plays awareness, consideration and conversion deliberately with the right formats, and measures every stage against its own yardstick, escapes the expensive fight at the bottom of the funnel. It is more work than harvesting alone, and it is the way brands grow sustainably instead of only getting more expensive.
