Amazon CPC is meaningful when evaluated against the likelihood and economic value of an order. A higher average click price can reflect a different traffic mix, a more competitive auction or a deliberate shift towards more valuable searches. Each explanation calls for a different action.

Calculate a defensible CPC ceiling

Start with contribution before advertising, then reserve the contribution you want to retain. Multiply the remaining allowance per order by the expected order rate per click. Use consistent net revenue, cost definitions and attribution maturity.

Orders per click Advertising allowance per order Model CPC ceiling
8% €8 €0.64
10% €8 €0.80
15% €8 €1.20

Returns, multiple units, changing prices and varying product margins can require a more detailed model. Use the calculation to identify questions, not to apply one bid across the account.

Test whether the average hides a mix change

Suppose inexpensive traffic costs €0.50 per click and another segment costs €1.50. An 80/20 mix averages €0.70. A 50/50 mix averages €1.00 even though neither segment became more expensive. Cutting both segments because the average rose would address the wrong cause.

Compare search intent, product, placement and campaign role. Allow conversion attribution to mature before interpreting recent spend. A campaign report and a session-based Business Report do not use interchangeable denominators.

Route the finding to the correct team

If CPC rises while conversion is stable, inspect auction exposure and mix. If CPC is stable while conversion falls, inspect availability, price, Featured Offer and the product page. If both deteriorate, separate traffic quality from offer problems before making broad cuts.

Review Search Query Performance for query-level context and Business Reports for changes in traffic and sales. Neither report alone establishes why a change occurred.

Turn the diagnosis into a bounded action

Select one material segment, record the baseline and identify the proposed mechanism. Set an observation window and economic limit before changing bids or content. Avoid universal rules such as stopping every keyword after a fixed number of clicks regardless of expected conversion.
