You built a product, optimized it and advertised it, and suddenly other sellers are selling under your listing. Some undercut your price, others deliver inferior or counterfeit goods and ruin your reviews. That is listing hijacking. It is infuriating and in most cases solvable, if you go about it in a structured way. This article shows how to spot hijackers, remove them and prevent it in future.
What hijacking is
On Amazon several sellers often share the same product listing (the same ASIN). With generic products that is normal. It becomes a problem when somebody attaches themselves to your branded product without authorization, often with counterfeit or different goods. The hijacker then takes your Buy Box (through a lower price, for instance) and sells under your name. The damage: lost revenue, price pressure and, worst of all, bad reviews for goods that never came from you.
Spotting hijackers early
The faster you react, the smaller the damage. Watch for the warning signs: you suddenly lose the Buy Box, the price shown differs from yours, a new "seller" appears under your listing, or you get reviews describing a product that is not yours. Regularly checking your most important listings, ideally with an alert on Buy Box loss, is the best early warning there is.
Acting against hijackers step by step
Proceed calmly and keep records:
- Secure evidence: take screenshots of the other offer, the seller name and the price. If in doubt, order a unit from the hijacker yourself to prove the goods are counterfeit or different.
- Make contact directly: sometimes a factual request to the seller to remove the offer helps, referring to your trademark rights. With counterfeiters that is often ineffective, but it is a documented first step.
- Report through Brand Registry: if you are brand registered, use the protection and reporting tools to report a trademark or product rights infringement. That is the most effective route.
- File a complaint with Amazon: report counterfeit or infringing offers through the official channels, with your evidence.
One point matters: stay with the facts and use the official channels, because that protects you and speeds up the handling.
Prevention beats cure
The best protection lies in making hijacking hard in the first place:
- Brand Registry: the basic requirement for the strongest protection and reporting tools.
- Transparency: makes every genuine unit uniquely identifiable and counterfeits considerably harder.
- Branded packaging and bundles: make it harder for third parties to offer "the same" product.
- Regular monitoring: the earlier you notice a hijacker, the sooner they are gone again.
Limiting the damage
If a hijacker has produced bad reviews for somebody else's goods, you can raise those with Amazon with evidence, since they do not concern your actual product. In parallel, concentrate on winning the Buy Box back and stabilizing your listing again.
In short
Listing hijacking is a serious but usually solvable problem. The key is speed and structure: spot hijackers early, secure evidence and act consistently through the official channels, Brand Registry above all. Better still is prevention through trademark registration, Transparency and continuous monitoring. Whoever actively protects their most valuable listings makes themselves an unattractive target for free riders.
